AP reports suggest that as of 5 August, 52 parents and spouses of active duty Service members have been placed in detention by ICE and that at least 8 remained in federal immigration custody. The news service also suggests that those numbers are very likely an undercount since Homeland Security not only restricts access to information but frequently lies.
The detention of Service members’ family is a reversal from Trump’s first administration, and some of those detained are eligible for immigration benefits first put in place during President George W. Bush’s administration. That policy permitted a “military parole in place” allowing spouses, children, and parents of active-duty personnel and veterans to apply for and obtain legal status.
While the Navy and Space Force have stopped promoting enlistment as a pathway to protecting family members from immigration enforcement, both the Army and National Guard are still using it as an enticement.
