Dear VMFC Members and Supporters,

As we enter the final day before New Mexico’s Primary Election on Tuesday, June 2, I want to focus on a simple but powerful message: Vote.

For generations, veterans have defended the right of Americans to participate in self-government. Many of our service members ahve served in places where free elections were nonexistent, manipulated, or denied altogether. We understand better than most that democracy is not guaranteed, it requires participation.

This election is particularly significant because it is the first primary conducted under New Mexico’s new semi-open primary system. Thanks to the passage of Senate Bill 16, Decline-to-State (Independent) voters now have the opportunity to participate in choosing Primary candidates. Expanding participation strengthens our democracy and gives more New Mexicans a voice in the process.

Voting is about more than selecting candidates. It is about honoring the sacrifices made by those who came before us and ensuring that the voices of veterans, military families, and our communities continue to be heard.

I encourage every member of our caucus to do three things before Election Day:

1. Vote if you have not already done so.
2. Remind at least three friends, family members, or fellow veterans to vote.
3. Help someone overcome a barrier to voting, whether it’s finding a polling location, obtaining information, or arranging transportation.

The Veterans and Military Families Caucus remains committed to advocating for veterans’ healthcare, housing, education, behavioral health services, military families, and policies that strengthen our communities. But none of those efforts matter unless citizens participate in the democratic process.

Veterans have always answered the call to serve. This week, I ask all of us to answer another call, the call to vote.
