Honoring that service means rehiring fired workers at the Department of Veterans Affairs. It means telling the story of service and sacrifice by heroic New Mexicans, including Navajo Code Talkers. And it means paying our service members, who should never be pawns in any federal shutdown.
Senator Martin Heinrich
Our service members have stood on the front lines to protect our democracy and safeguard our way of life. We must ensure they receive the care, respect, and support they deserve. I remain committed to fighting for our veterans in New Mexico and across the nation — to make sure they have the resources and support they need when they return home.
Senator Ben Ray Lujan
First Congressional District Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury speaking in Albuquerque Veterans Day

Here in New Mexico, we understand service. On Veterans Day, we are called to live that truth and to build a future worthy of the sacrifices that you all made for it. So let us carry this spirit of service and sacrifice by serving one another with the same sense of duty and courage. And let us ensure that every veteran knows that this country stands with them, in words in deeds and in unwavering gratitude.
Second Congressional District Congressman Gabe Vasquez Speaking in Mesilla Veterans Day
As Americans, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to the service members who have worn our nation’s uniform throughout history,” said Rep. Vasquez. “It is because of their sacrifices that we are able to live with freedom, opportunity, and the promise of a better tomorrow in the greatest country on Earth. On Veterans Day, it’s imperative we pause to reflect on our veterans’ service in times of both war and peace and the values they have fought so dearly to defend.
Despite Being in the Minority Our Senators Capture Some Cash for New Mexico
The work of Senators Heinrich and Lujan will result in more than $200 million for New Mexico projects. The bills, among the few passed by this Congress and signed into law this year, include The Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Relation Agencies Appropriations Bill which earmarked $195,250,000 for improvements at New Mexico’s three Air Force bases, including $3,200,000 for a child development center at Kirtland AFB. The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriation includes another nearly $7 million for emergency responses agencies, community infrastructure needs and early childhood development programs.
