Message From the Chair

Standing Guard for New Mexico's Veterans

January 1, 2026

Frank J. Smith

Dear Caucus Members,

We’re starting 2026 in a world that looks much different than it did just a week ago.

Between the sudden military actions in Venezuela and the administration’s aggressive “regime change” posture, many of us are waking up with deep concerns about what comes next for our active-duty troops. Closer to home, we are facing the reality of the “DOGE” cuts targeting our VA hospitals and the unprecedented federalization of National Guard troops without Governor consultation, a direct challenge to state’s sovereignty and our service members’ rights.

In times of instability, our mission as the DPNM Veterans and Military Families Caucus becomes clearer and more critical. We are not just a political group; we are the first line of defense for New Mexico’s veteran community. We are the ones who must advocate for the funding our hospitals were promised and ensure our Guard members are not used as pawns.

To hold the line, we need to be at full strength. We cannot fight these battles with empty seats or an empty bank account.

1. Call for Leadership: We currently have vacancies for Vice Chair for CD2, Vice Chair for CD3, and Treasurer. If you are tired of watching these events unfold and feeling helpless, this is your chance to step into the arena. We need leaders who can help us organize our response to these federal oversteps and protect our community here in New Mexico. [Insert link to apply/reply]

2. Annual Dues Drive: Our ability to print materials, host town halls, and lobby for state-level protections depends on our treasury. It is time to renew your annual membership. Your contribution is directly used to amplify the voice of New Mexico veterans against cuts and overreach. Donate HERE

The national landscape is shifting beneath our feet, but our commitment to each other remains rock solid. Let’s get organized, get staffed up, and get to work.

Semper Fi,
