The ever-vigilant DPM Communications Director Daniel Garcia scooped the Associated Press when he filed a July 29 press release about MS Now’s revelation that the Administration plans to gut Senior prescription insurance coverage available since the George W. Bush Administration.
MS Now reporter Steve Brown quoted Wall Street Journal reporting, “The Trump administration plans to end a subsidy program that helped hold down premiums for Medicare drug plans, a move that could leave many seniors facing higher rates for their prescription coverage next year.” The Associated Press has also pointed out that the cuts will encourage senior citizens to move their insurance from Medicare to the private insurance sector known as “Medicare Advantage.”
In classic spinning of the facts, Trump’s Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, TV personality Dr. Oz, reports the eliminated program will recoup $3.6 billion in subsidies. The Government Accounting Office disputes this figure, reporting the move will actually amount to a $9.8 billion cut for the full 2027 fiscal year. According to administration officials, formal notification of the program cut will be sent three weeks before mid-term elections, and the subsidy program will end December 31, 2026,
The DPNM’s release states that “Because of Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, premiums have skyrocketed and millions of people who enrolled in health insurance through HealthCare.gov this year have already been dropped from coverage for being unable to pay their first month’s premium. However, New Mexico is the only state to actually increase enrollment in Affordable Care Act coverage because our Democrats stepped up when we needed them to.”
Garcia cited Governor Grisham’s 2025 Special Session to approve $17 million in State funds to help New Mexicans afford health insurance and the $250 million appropriated to extend State subsidies year-round, protecting more than 27,000 New Mexicans from losing coverage. While Obamacare marketplace enrollment plummeted 13% nationally, it rose 14.5% in New Mexico.
